Henderson
County, North Carolina, (hendersoncountync.org)
was settled in the 1700’s on Cherokee hunting
grounds. The 375 square mile fertile high
plateau became home to Scotch-Irish, Welsh and
English pioneers. In the early 1800’s
Hendersonville and Flat Rock became a summer
resort for wealthy South Carolina planters
escaping the heat of the “low country”. The
tradition continues today with Hendersonville’s
pleasant summers and mild winters attracting
year-round residents as
well as summer visitors.
Henderson County’s population is approximately
100,000. The City of
Hendersonville is the
county seat with approximately 12,000
population. Average elevation is 2,200 ft. with
highest point—Little Pisgah Mountain--5,240 ft.
The county economy is based primarily upon
diversified manufacturing, agriculture and
tourism.
Historic Hendersonville (historichendersonville.org).
Included in the National Register of Historic
Places, Hendersonville is replete with antique
shops, boutiques, an old general store, cafes,
numerous restaurants, bakery, museums, farmers’
market, and so much more. Downtown
Hendersonville has over 150 shops and 7 major
banks all within easy walking distance. With
historic architecture dating back to the late
1800’s, Hendersonville has a special Southern
charm aiding in its designation as a “Main
Street U.S.A.” community—one of 400 in the
nation!
Hendersonville Education and Entertainment
The Carl Sandburg Home National Historic
Site (nps.gov/carl)
(15 minutes from Cummings Cove).
Carl Sandburg, the internationally renowned
poet, biographer, lecturer, columnist,
folksinger, author of
American fairytales, and
winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, made his last
home in Flat Rock, North Carolina, located just
minutes from Hendersonville. From 1945 until his
death in 1967, Sandburg lived and
worked on his
264 acre farm, Connemara, writing, lecturing,
and publishing. More than one third of his body
of work was produced in Flat Rock. His wife,
Paula Sandburg, achieved national prominence
with her Chikaming herd of 200 prize winning
goats. Managed by the National Park Service, the
property is open to the public daily except on
Christmas, visitors may view Sandburg’s library
of over 10,000 books, personal papers and enjoy
the hiking trails and goat barn.
The Flat Rock Playhouse (flatrockplayhouse.org):
(15 minutes from Cummings Cove). Designated the
State Theater of North Carolina, The Flat Rock
Playhouse features an eight month season of
plays, including Broadway musicals, comedy,
drama and children’s theater. Considered one of
the top ten seasonal theaters in the United
States, The Flat Rock Playhouse attracts actors
from Broadway, film and television. In addition
to Flat Rock’s professional theater, there are
community theater groups and a film society.
The Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra (hendersonvillesymphony.org).
Celebrating over 35 years as a professional
symphony orchestra, Hendersonville Symphony
Orchestra employs 70 musicians who perform a
six-concert season. The orchestra also provides
musical enrichment and education programs as
well as scholarships for area young people.
The Opportunity House (opportunityhouse.org):
(15 minutes from Cummings Cove).
The Opportunity House is a membership-based,
non-profit organization for cultural, social and
educational pursuits. It was founded in 1958 by
retirees interested in physical fitness, arts
and crafts. Best known for its on-going bridge
lessons and tournaments, some residents
relocated to Hendersonville just to study and
play bridge with The Opportunity House. Today
for a modest annual membership fee, members
participate in a variety of pursuits, ranging
from ballroom dancing to bridge, lapidary,
pottery, stained glass, chess, weaving and you
name it. If there is an interest, The
Opportunity House is the place to pursue that
interest.
Blue Ridge Community College (brcc.edu),
a two year community college with a continuing
education program, is a vital part of Henderson
and Transylvania Counties. With campuses in both
Brevard and Flat Rock, Cummings Cove is
conveniently located mid-way between the two
campuses. The Center for LifeLong Learning
offers courses in history, science, gardening,
humor, music, health and wellness, political
perspectives, literature and antiquing. Short
trips are offered to waterfalls, theaters in
North Carolina and nearby states, museums,
behind the scenes at city and county facilities,
canoeing, picnics, rafting and educational
retreats.
Henderson County Public Library (henderson.lib.nc.us)
With a main library and 5 branches (one is 5
minutes from Cummings Cove), Henderson County
boasts one of the highest circulations in the
state and is the center for many exhibitions,
lectures, literary and film programs. The
Friends of The Library have over 2,000 members.
The Friends purchased their own building 2 years
ago to collect and sell used books, raising over
$100,000 for the Library’s special programs
fund.
The Kellogg Center for Creativity and Design (kelloggcenter.org)
has 2,460 square feet of galleries featuring the
work of professional artists and the faculty and
students of the three UNC mountain campuses: UNC
Asheville, Appalachian State University, and
Western Carolina University. Other exhibits and
lectures provide an educational focus to the
craft heritage and design of Western North
Carolina. The Institute for Applied Philosphy
and UNC Asheville’s Philosophy Dept. sponsor
monthly lectures to discuss philosophically
significant issues.
The Arts Center of Henderson County and The Art
League sponsor many exhibitions, lectures and
educational programs as well as an annual
artfest on Main Street.

A New York Times affiliate is the daily
newspaper with two radio stations (WHKP and WTZQ)
and Mediacom cable television comprising
Hendersonville media.
Hendersonville Sightseeing & Nearby Wonders
The French Broad River, third oldest river
in the world, adjoins Cummings Cove as it flows
north from Rosman on its journey through
Asheville to Tennessee. Various rafting
companies offer river trips for a delightful day
of canoeing, rafting, kayaking or tubing. The
river is especially scenic as it flows through
the Biltmore Estate.
Jump off Rock is a scenic overlook not to be
missed just 10 minutes from Cummings Cove. It
provides a panoramic view of rolling pastures,
the Blue Ridge and Pisgah Mountains and Cummings
Cove.
The DuPont State Forest (dupontforest.com),
beginning only a few miles from Cummings Cove,
includes more than 10,000 acres of forest,
trails, and waterfalls between Hendersonville
and Brevard, North Carolina. Some popular points
of interest with easy access are Hooker Falls,
High Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Fawn Lake and
Stone Mountain. Take a picnic, plenty of water
and enjoy unsurpassed natural beauty just
minutes from your home.
Sliding Rock is a naturally occurring 60-foot
waterslide with a 7-foot deep pool that was
developed by the United States Forest Service
into a recreation area. Enjoy the slide yourself
or watch others from an observation deck.
Chimney Rock Park (chimneyrockpark.com):
Highway 64/74A, Chimney Rock (30 minutes from
Cummings Cove). With its incomparable dramatic
scenery and mild climate, North Carolina has
become the number three film-making state in the
country. Understandably, Chimney Rock’s
spectacular vistas have attracted the filmmakers
of The Last of the Mohicans, Firestarter and A
Breed Apart. The park features a 26 story
elevator ride to 75-mile views, 1,000 acres of
hiking trails, a 404-foot waterfall, and a
variety of special events.
Lake Lure: A scenic thirty minute drive from
Hendersonville, Lake Lure and the nostalgic,
newly-restored 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa makes
a delightful day trip. With its lovely beach,
cruise boats, and marina, it is no surprise that
this site was chosen for the film Dirty Dancing.
Hendersonville Community Services & Shopping
Pardee Hospital (pardeehospital.org)
is a not-for-profit hospital, located in
Hendersonville (10 minutes from Cummings Cove),
licensed for 222 acute care beds. In addition to
the hospital, Pardee has a 130-bed nursing
facility, an adult day care center, home health
services, a health education center, a rehab and
sports therapy complex, a women’s health center,
an urgent care facility and several family and
internal medicine practices. For the second
year, Pardee has ranked in the top ten percent
of hospitals in the United States for joint
replacement surgery and stroke care, according
to a comprehensive study released by
HealthGrades, the nation’s leading healthcare
ratings company.
Park Ridge Hospital (parkridgehospital.org)
is a not-for-profit acute care facility licensed
for 103 acute care beds. The hospital is one of
37 in the United States belonging to the
Adventist Health System. With 200 physicians and
over 900 employees, Park Ridge Hospital is known
for providing quality personalized care with a
special emphasis on wellness and preventive
medicine.
Asheville Regional Airport (flyavl.com)
(15 minutes from Cummings Cove) offers flights
on Continental, Delta, Northwest and USAir
carriers. The airport provides long-term parking
and airport limousine service. Alternative
airports are Greenville-Spartanburg (less than
an hour’s drive) and for international
travel--Charlotte-Douglass International Airport
(a little over an hour’s drive).
In addition to Downtown Hendersonville shops,
shopping centers and malls are within 5 to 20
minutes of Cummings Cove. Nearby villages of
Etowah and Horse Shoe fulfill day-to-day needs
for shopping within an easy 5 minute drive. The
Blue Ridge Shopping Mall and Highlands Square in
Hendersonville offer major department stores and
national chain stores. Two large-scale shopping
centers in Asheville are within 30 minutes
drive.
